If only.
"What is your biggest regret?"
This question was recently posed to me. It got me thinking hard.
There are always tons of regrets when you start asking yourself whether the path that you have not taken could well be the wiser decision. In life, we would never know which is the better option. Unless we can live an alternative life, cēterīs paribus.
Often, we could only muse over the "what ifs".
I don't usually think about wrong decisions as "regrets", as I don't view them as such. I see mistakes in my life as a consequence of my incompetency to fulfill something.
The only regrets that will bother me, will be hurting the people who matter to me.
It has always been my philosphy not to indulge in thinking about the "if onlys". I believe everything happens to you for a reason. Regrets will never haunt you if you can rectify them, and learn from them.
I guess the lesson here is to be responsible for your actions, and commit to the decision.
Some quotations to share:
"If only. Those must be the two saddest words in the world."
"Make the most of your regrets. . . . To regret deeply is to live afresh. "
"I would rather regret the things that I have done than the things that I have not."
"The bitterest tears shed over graves are for words left unsaid and deeds left undone."
"Youth is a blunder; Manhood a struggle; Old Age a regret."
"Regret for the things we did can be tempered by time; it is regret for the things we did not do that is inconsolable."
